Neena Gupta’s Insights on Life, Work, and Relationships
Perseverance in Acting: After years of roles that led to nowhere, she gained notable recognition for her role in ‘Badhaai Ho’ which came after many highs and lows through her career. “This profession is tough, you have to keep at it.” says Neena.
Relationships: “I don’t think I have understood relationships yet. You can never lecture another on relationships. You have to keep working and evolving in your relationship.” Each relationship teaches you something new, whether personal or professional. “Pati bhi devta tha because he used to earn. Now, we are all equals, independent individuals.” Times have changed, and so have relationships.
Life’s Challenges: “You have to sacrifice a lot for big dreams. I didn’t have the privilege of going to salons or movies. Life’s comforts become secondary; you grow and adapt to situations.” You have to roll with the punches, and adapt as you go. Discomfort is the biggest teacher and the only constant in life, if you’re growing as you go.
Marriage and Work: “I got married late (my second marriage) and thought I’d enjoy life as a housewife. A year later, I got bored and felt taken for granted. I said, ‘Neena Gupta, get up, get out of the house, and work.’ Work is crucial in life. Without work, the mind slows down. I’m happiest when working. My children and my work are my life.” Her purpose in life keeps her motivated, it’s important to find your own purpose in life and pursue it with passion.
Mother’s Wisdom: “My mom always said you need a roof over your head, education, and independence. She bought me a house in Juhu for 9 lakhs. I was privileged to have supportive parents and an education. I could cook, teach; education helped.” It’s important to pave the way for the next generation, and support their goals.
Dignity of Labour & Success: “I always believed in the dignity of labour.” No role was too small. Work is work, and one should seize each opportunity that comes their way if they wish to, and if you believe in it, then it has dignity. “Success is measured by the kind of work you’re doing, not awards. It’s all about hard work.” Neena says, as she reflects on her past roles and the recognition, or lack thereof, which never deterred her from continuing on in her career in Bollywood.
Motherhood and Anxiety: “Masaba’s journey was filled with anxiety for me. Mothers are bound to worry and anxiety, no matter how old the child is.” And in raising Masaba, Neena has continued her mother’s legacy of raising confident and empowered women.
Earning Respect: “I gained respect in society due to financial and emotional independence. I never asked for it; I earned it by doing what I loved.” and this respect is what kept her going, and brought her the roles which she has loved doing.
With a renewed passion for Bollywood, and sharing her journey with her daughter, the future holds much in store for Neena Gupta. Her lessons along the way, and determination to persevere, only motivate her to chase her next dream. What is this dream? “Surprise! You will know in a few days. We must always keep thinking of new things to do.”
