In the current global landscape, companies worldwide are experimenting with various iterations of hybrid work models, exploring alternative weekly working hours, and even considering shorter workweeks. The economic vibrancy in India has resulted in a multitude of opportunities and choices for individuals in the job market. Consequently, the realization of an evolved workweek may be closer than anticipated.
Presenting my formula for an ideal work week.
Mondays – Thursdays:
7 hours (inclusive of 20-odd minutes for breaks)
Additional 2 hours, optional, for meetings and commitments outside the office
Fridays:
6 hours
Saturday:
2 hours
This totals a 36-hour workweek, with the potential to extend to 44 hours based on individual preferences. Research suggests that this configuration strikes an optimal balance between work and personal life.
In-person meetings remain crucial for fostering trust within professional networks, building rapport, demonstrating receptiveness, and maintaining open lines of communication with clients or partners. Saturday inclusion is justified by the collaborative nature of work, where tasks often depend on responses from diverse schedules, approvals, and colleagues across different cities and time zones.
Flexibility in work hours requires individuals to be accessible beyond the standard working hours. While some may opt for a fixed 9-10 hour shift with weekends off, those aiming for maximum productivity within a shorter timeframe must remain available for unforeseen demands. In a digital era marked by constant connectivity, complete disengagement may convey an unfavorable impression.
Despite the prevalence of average working days lasting 10-11 hours in many large organizations, studies indicate that longer hours do not necessarily correlate with increased productivity. Reports underscore the growing concerns of burnout and stress in individuals leading busier lifestyles compared to the time when NRN founded Infosys.
Contemporary aspirations emphasize the desire for work to be enjoyable, and for time and talent to be acknowledged and rewarded, irrespective of the number of hours spent at work. Individuals committed to task completion and professional growth will align their efforts with the necessary time investment to achieve these goals.
