What Does Independence Mean To You?

We talk a lot about the spirit of Independence Day, but perhaps we need to dig deeper and understand what it represents for each of us.

Independence can mean different things to different people based on their circumstances and their aspirations.

For women, independence can denote the freedom to build something of their own, the freedom of choice, and the freedom of agency.

It is a daily endeavour to gain independence, not a one-time proposition. It’s often in the struggle to gain it or in its absence that we truly realise its importance.

It was also one of the reasons why we conceptualised Ladies Who Lead, as a platform for women to feel recognised and gain confidence.

Independence can come from women having the ability to…  -Express themselves. -Having a voice. -Sharing their story. -Feeling empowered. -Being able to mentor others and grow.

Life gives us an opportunity to value independence by practicing it — by having an opinion, taking a stand on things big and small that affect us, and deciding how one wants to earn and spend one’s money.

Doing this will give us a lot more control over our lives and help us give it the shape and direction we want.
